Monday Made It - June 30

Still no teacher toolbox yet lol.  Last week was wedding dress shopping and then my fiancé surprised with me a staycation at Mandalay Bay for the weekend...so needless to say the toolbox was the last thing on my mind.  I'm pulling for next week.

Even though I don't have my teacher toolbox ready yet, I'm still linking up for Monday Made It with 4th Grade Frolics.  Be sure to link up here!

My new school that I'm at is big in the 5 step writing process. I know most schools use this, but my last one didn't really have writing resources.  Since they're big in it and I know we'll have writing folders, I decided to turn my old teacher plan bins into storage for their writing folders. This way I can see where each student is at in the writing process and it can help me stay on top of that.  I got this idea from Pinterest here at the Superlative Six's Blog. Thank you for the idea!

Monday Made It

So excited to link up with 4th Grade Frolics for Monday Made It. Be sure to link up with her here.

Now, originally I was going to work on my teacher toolbox to use for today's Monday Made It, but I realized this project needs more time than I had, so stay tuned for that next week.

My project this week was a fun first and last day memory.  These frames can be used to take a picture of the kiddos on the first day of school and the last. They hold up the frame and it makes a cute keepsake for parents. I made a large frame a few years ago for my first graders that they held up and their head was inside.  I liked that, but since I changed grade levels I decided to make a new one and do this.  I got my frames at Target - size 8 x 10 and just used scrapbook paper I had around the house.

Thanks for checking this project out. Be sure to link up with Monday Made It!

New Teacher Books to Read

Now that summer is underway it's time to start working on reading my new teacher books. I love having time to delve into new teacher resources. Here's what I'll be reading...

This one is for my new school.  It's all about growth and fixed mindset.

I've read Comprehension Connections in a book study a few years ago, but want to brush up on it.  I taught first grade at the time and this book works well with 3rd grade and up from what I read.  Since I'm teaching 2nd graders who are working with 3rd grade materials I thought it would be great to refresh myself on this one.

Since I enjoyed reading Tanny McGregor's Comprehension Connections, I recently purchased her new one Genre Connections.  I'm especially excited to see her info on nonfiction text. With Common Core, this is much bigger now than it used to be, so I can always get new ideas.

I saw this one on Amazon as well and thought it looked like it was chalk full of information.  Strategies that Work has a number of ideas that can be used in the classroom and I can't wait to read them and try them out.

When I'm finished, I will post some of the new ideas I've learned on my blog.  So, be sure to check back!

So, new teachers (and I'm new again since I'm at a new school) are due back August 6.  Hopefully I can get all this reading finished while also planning a wedding, moving into a new apartment, working on TPT, and some crafts.  Good thing it's summer!

Pinspired Thursdays

I'm linking up with Mrs. H over at Just a Primary Girl for Pinspired Thursdays.  Now, that summer is here...the Pinterest projects can begin!

I've decided now that it's summer, it's time to cook and bake more.  I'm also really into using the crock pot.  Makes meals so much easier!  Next week, I'd like to make....

Crockpot Buffalo Chicken Recipe ~ 4-5 Chicken Breasts, thawed • 12oz bottle RedHot Wing Sauce • 1oz pkt Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning ~ Cook chicken in crockpot on high for 3hrs. Drain juices. Combine wing sauce & ranch. Pour mixture over chicken, cook on high for 30 mins, or until done. Serve whole breasts or shred and serve on buns.
I found this recipe here at the Frugal Girls.  Simple recipe with a few ingredients and looks tasty!

Now, I know I'm behind to the party on this next Pinterest find.  I've been wanting to make one of the teacher toolboxes for the last year or two.  However, I never seemed to find the time.  Well, this is the year and summer I've decided to do it!  I bought my toolbox at Lowe's the other day for only $20.  See 4th Grade Frolics version below....

Check back on Monday.  I hope to have it completed in time to link up for Monday Made It!

Mental Math Ideas - 2.NBT.8

Here's one of the packets I've had waiting in my TPT file to finish and update with picture of my kids in action.  This TPT packet focuses on the math standard - 2.NTB.8 - Mental math adding and subtracting 10 and 100 from any number 0-999.  We did this lesson later in the year which I debated was the right timing.  However, I'm glad I waited.  By April/May, my kids had a stronger foundation with number sense for 3 digit numbers so they had an easier time understanding that the only number changing is either in the tens or hundreds spot depending on if you are adding or subtracting by 10 or 100.

Here are some pictures of my kids playing the Mental Math +/- 10 Bingo. They had a great time playing!

Here's another game in my Mental Math Packet.  This game is called "Solve It." Students flip over a number card.  Then, students flip over a +/- card that tells them to either add or subtract 10 or 100 to the number. Then, students record the number sentence on the recording sheet and solve the problem using mental math.

Moving On and Advice Needed....

So, I'm excited to announce that I will be moving schools again this summer.  I will still be in the Vegas area, but will be teaching at a school in Henderson.  Still second grade, but I will be leaving public school and moving to private. I'm very excited for this change and to be finding a school that is a great fit for me as a teacher and person.

Since I've taught public school for 7 years and this is my first time venturing into private, I'm asking for advice from any private school teachers out there.  What did you like? What advice would you give a newbie private school teacher?  This school is not religiously affiliated, but I would love advice from anyone whose taught private school - no matter what kind!  Please comment below!

Thanks in advance for advice. I look forward to learning more about the private school sector!

Happy Friday and Happy 1st day of summer for me and many others.  For those who have a few more days/weeks to go, hang in there!

June Currently

Wow! How is it June?  And, thank goodness it's June at that!  I have 3 more days of school left.  2 days with kids and one for teachers....boy am I ready for summer.  I've linked up with Farley for June Currently.  Be sure to link up with her here.

Listening: I haven't fully gotten into this season of the Bachelorette, but I'm hoping to watch the episodes I missed on DVR and then go from there.

Loving: Only 3 more days until summer begins! 2 more days with my sweet kiddos, one teacher work day, and then I'm free for the summer!

Thinking: Projects- I have many TPT projects started, almost finished, etc that I need to finish. I also have new project and ideas for the classroom that I've been thinking about and need time to get started on.

Wanting: To jump into wedding planning. My fiancé and I are getting married  next June.  We have a venue and a date, but I've been waiting for school to finish up to get started on everything else...and I can't wait....I'm so excited.  Especially after we went to his sister's beautiful wedding this weekend.  Now, I'm raring to go and get planning!

Needing: Sleep. The end of the year and the beginning of the year are always so rough on teachers. I'm always tired, but I lay in bed each night thinking of everything I need to do or try to remember to do to pack up the classroom and get the school year wrapped up.

Summer Bucket List:
1. Wedding plan - getting ahead on as many things as possible while I'm not working in the summer.
2. Trips - we have some trips and staycations planned - some much needed relaxation
3. School Projects - I'm already ready to get moving on things for next year. Can't wait to start linking back up with Monday Made It, now that I actually have time to make something.

Here are a few pictures from my fiancé's sister's wedding in Tucson this past weekend. We had an amazing time. Can't wait for our own wedding next summer!
